Place du Canada
An American Point of View
Sir;
I wish you success in you effort to promote Canadian patriotism. Canada seems to me to
be a place in which the great experiment of democracy can continue avoiding the failures
of its neighbor to the South. It is the ONLY thoroughly modern and democratic country in
which one can drive from modern cities and within a few hours be in land untouched by man
and his greed since the days of Columbus.
It was my good fortune to be in Canada in October of '95. During that time I travelled
from Toronto to Montreal during the days leading up to the vote. As an American from the
Southern states I was amazed at how blandly people discussed carving up the largest (in
land and potential) democracy in the world.
