Pearson-Shoyama Institute creates Aboriginal Cultural Advisory Board
The Pearson-Shoyama Institute has created the Aboriginal Cultural Advisory Board. For some time we have wanted to expand our expertise and strong linkages with the media to include other cultural communities. Through the Aboriginal Cultural Advisory Board we hope to provide a non-partisan forum to recognize Aboriginal peoples and their fundamental contributions to the formation of Canada as we know it. At the same time, it is our intent to provide Aboriginal peoples with a greater voice in the public policy development process.
Creating and sustaining national community is an ongoing act of imagination, of who we are. With this in mind, the Institute has created the ACAB to provide a greater voice in public policy dialogue with respect for, and inclusion of Aboriginal communities.
Mary Moylum is the first Chair of the ACAB.
Chief Bill Cranmer of the Namgis First Nations has also
been appointed to sit on ACAB. Bill was one of the key people
instrumental in setting up the U’Mista Cultural Society in 1980.
As current Chair of U’Mista, he presides over the repatriated
potlatch collection that was taken away from his people in 1922.
He is also the Chair to the First Peoples Cultural Foundation.
Ron Ignace, the former Chief of the Skeetchestn Indian Band will
also sit on ACAB. He is currently the president of the Cultural
and Education Society in Kamloops, and an advisor on National
Language and Culture to the AFN.
